Nick Of Time Books in Order

The Nick Of Time books are not a long-running series so much as one thriller told in five hard-driving episodes. John Gilstrap first released the story as a serial, and that format matters. At the center is Nicki Janssen, a seventeen-year-old whose future is suddenly measured in treatments, limits, and other people's decisions. She refuses that script. Nicki's father, Carter Janssen, gives the story much of its emotional weight. He is a prosecuting attorney, which means he understands the law better than most people chasing his daughter ever could. He is also her father, which means logic only gets him so far. The books work because they never treat the chase as abstract. Every bad decision Nicki makes lands on him too, and every mile she puts between them makes the rescue harder.

What sets Nick of Time apart from many fugitive-love stories is that Gilstrap keeps both the romance and the danger in view. Nicki is not simply running toward love. She is running away from illness, pity, and the sense that her life is being managed for her. The books understand why that feels intoxicating, even as they show the cost.
