Nick Lafferty Books in Order

Nick Lafferty is one of David DeLee's darkest lead characters. He is an ex-DEA agent carrying grief, anger, and the kind of history that never stays buried for long. If Grace deHaviland brings speed and swagger, Nick brings wear, pressure, and a sense that every new case is tangled up with something older and more personal.

The series opens with Crystal White, where Nick returns to New York and gets drawn into the fight against a deadly synthetic drug tied to enemies from his past. His old partner Delmar Harley is a big part of the appeal here. Their shared history gives the books a bruised, lived-in feel, and Del's own struggles keep the partnership from ever becoming too easy.

Out of the Game raises the stakes by pulling Nick into the investigation of two murdered cops and a dead witness. There is mob pressure, FBI scrutiny, and real doubt about who can be trusted. Assistant district attorney Caitlin McKenna becomes important to the series too, giving the books another angle on how cases move through the system, and how people inside that system can still end up cornered.

Later, Cold Cases shows how well DeLee can weave multiple lines of danger together. Old disappearances, challenged convictions, local politics, and threats to Nick's closest allies all land at once. The crossover novel Too Far also matters, because it brings Nick into Grace's world and shows how naturally DeLee's different series can overlap.

These books are thrillers, but they are not clean-cut action pieces. They are more interested in damage, loyalty, and the way a case can grind people down while it unfolds. Nick is capable, but he is never untouched by what he is doing, and that gives the series weight.

If you want DeLee in a darker, more overt crime-thriller mode, start here. Nick Lafferty's books are tense, personal, and often rougher around the edges than the police procedurals. That roughness is part of the point.
