Series background & context

Brice Bannon is David DeLee's answer to the question, what if a small-town New Hampshire private investigator also happened to be a former Coast Guard commander with access to a secret homeland-security team? He runs the Keel Haul in Hampton Beach, stays in the Coast Guard Reserve, and keeps getting pulled into work that is much bigger than a bar fight or a local missing-person case.

That double life is the hook. On one side, Brice knows the rhythms of the seacoast, the marinas, the beaches, the local gossip, and the kind of trouble that can drift in with the tide. On the other, he is recruited for targeted threats that normal channels cannot handle. His closest allies, Tarakesh "Blades" Sardana and CWO Skyjack McMurphy, give the series its team feel.

The early stories show how flexible the setup is. Blood in the Water brings treasure lore and danger off the New England coast. Any Means Necessary turns a suspicious cargo ship into a tight maritime thriller. What Meets the Eye drops Brice into a smaller, more personal mystery, and Blue Charlie Foxtrot gives him a war-buddy case that refuses to look like suicide for long.

Then the books start to open outward. Facing the Storm introduces the bigger canvas of the series. The Oceanic Princess sends Brice and his team after a terrifying threat aboard a ship bound for Boston Harbor. Strike of the Stingray keeps the pressure on with a missing weapon and a vengeful enemy. The Yakuza Gambit swings from Hampton Beach to Boston's criminal underworld, mixing gang-war energy with the series' seacoast roots.

It keeps getting bigger. Siege at Tiamat Bluff strands Brice in an underwater city with terrorists and the President of the United States, while Crimson Storm throws him into a violent Gulf of Maine rescue and a hunt tied to a lost Japanese sword. Even when the plots go large, the stories stay grounded in teamwork, local knowledge, and Brice's habit of stepping in when something feels wrong.

That makes these books easy to place on the thriller map. They are part coastal adventure, part covert-ops thriller, and part mystery. You come for storms, smugglers, suspicious ships, and high-stakes missions. You stay for the way Brice, Skyjack, and Blades work together when the sea, and the people on it, turn dangerous.
