Series background & context

Craig Stephen Copland's New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries does exactly what the title promises. It returns to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and gives them new cases to solve in the old world of Baker Street, hansom cabs, clubmen, country houses, anxious clients, and police who are just a step behind.

The setup is comfortingly familiar.

Holmes is still brilliant, Watson is still loyal, and 221B is still the place where strange people arrive with stranger problems. But Copland does not simply copy Conan Doyle scene for scene. Instead, he writes fresh mysteries that often nod to the Canon through their titles, structure, or starting premise. Books like Studying Scarlet, The Sign of the Tooth, and The Adventure of the Norwood Rembrandt are built to feel at home beside the originals while still giving readers a new puzzle.

That makes the series especially easy to approach. Most of the books work as standalones. You can start near the beginning if you want to watch Copland settle into the format, or you can pick a later title because the hook appeals to you. One book may turn on a locked-room death, another on a missing sports team, another on blackmail, art theft, espionage, publishing rivalries, or family secrets. The pleasures are the same ones that have always driven Holmes stories: the odd clue, the false lead, the dramatic explanation, and the feeling that chaos can be made readable if the right mind studies it hard enough.

Copland also gives himself room to roam. Some books stay close to London drawing rooms and police offices. Others move outward into schools, islands, museums, docks, country villages, or political circles. Historical settings matter here. These are not generic costume mysteries. They lean into the social world around Holmes, with class tension, imperial reach, fashionable scandals, radicals, journalists, clergy, doctors, actors, and crooks all taking their turn in the spotlight.

Another thing the series does well is balance affection with invention. Holmes fans will catch the jokes, reversals, and title riffs. Newer readers can simply enjoy the cases as old-fashioned detective adventures. The tone usually stays readable and direct. Even when the plots reach toward melodrama or Gothic atmosphere, the books come back to motive, means, and observation.

That is really the heart of the series.

If you like your Holmes traditional, but you also want more of him than Conan Doyle left behind, this is the appeal. These books are not trying to replace the Canon. They are trying to keep the game going. They imagine more mornings at Baker Street, more impossible cases, more conversations by the fire, and more moments when Watson watches his friend see the answer before anyone else even understands the question.
