New Earth begins before the apocalypse, with a secret that a small number of powerful people do not intend to share. An asteroid is coming, Earth is in real danger, and the response is not noble public unity. It is private planning, hidden facilities, and a scramble to save only fragments of the human race. That cold opening gives the series a strong edge right away.

The first book, ARC, follows the survival plan built around the former International Space Station, transformed into a cryogenic refuge. Amir Weatherby and the scientists around him think they are preparing to outlast the end of the world. In one sense they are right. In another, they badly underestimate how strange the future waiting for them will be.

When the survivors return, Earth is still there but hardly recognizable. That is where the series really becomes itself. New Earth is not only a disaster story. It is a post-apocalyptic resettlement story, with displaced survivors trying to understand a changed planet, altered power structures, and new threats that are not confined to human politics. Dr. David Anderson, the Sierra team, and their increasingly important AI all help carry that later part of the arc.

The second and third books widen the danger. Warring human groups remain a problem, but so does the plague-like menace of the Swarm, especially once darkness falls. By the time the story reaches Echo, the series has turned into a survival journey across a hostile world where every fragile gain could be lost again on the road.

This is one of Ford's more idea-heavy series, but it stays readable because the focus is always on concrete stakes, get there, hold this ground, survive the night, decide who to trust. If you like end-of-the-world fiction that turns into an exploration of what comes centuries later, New Earth is worth a look.
