Series background & context

The Neah Bay novels take Owen Laukkanens crime writing to the wild edge of the Pacific Northwest, on the remote coast of Washington state. The series centers on a small harbor town near Deception Cove, where rain, surf, and towering evergreens frame lives that feel both beautiful and precarious.

At the heart of the books is Jess Winslow, a former US Marine who has come home from Afghanistan with PTSD and the weight of a troubled service record. She is a young widow living in a rundown house, trying to keep herself afloat with odd jobs and the steady comfort of Lucy, the pit-bull mix trained as her service and therapy dog.

Her unlikely counterpart is Mason Burke, an ex-con who spent more than a decade in a Michigan prison for a killing that still haunts him. Near the end of his sentence he joined a program that pairs inmates with rescue dogs, and he trained Lucy before she was placed with Jess. When he is finally released, the only thing he is sure about is that he wants to know the dog he bonded with is safe.

In Deception Cove, Mason follows a photograph to the Washington coast and knocks on Jesss door, only to walk into a standoff with a corrupt deputy sheriff. Jesss late husband was mixed up with drug traffickers and stole something valuable before he died, and now local law enforcement is using Lucy as leverage to get it back. Jess and Mason are forced into an uneasy alliance, racing through forests, rocky beaches, and backroads to protect the dog and keep themselves alive.

Lone Jack Trail picks up months later, with Jess training as a deputy in Makah County under a new sheriff and Mason trying to build a quieter life on the fringes of town. When the body of disgraced local hockey star Brock "Bad" Boyd washes ashore, Jess catches her first major case, and all the evidence seems to point toward Mason after a public fight between the two men. The investigation pulls them into small-town grudges, illegal dogfighting, and questions about how much people can really outrun their pasts.

These novels are full of danger, but they keep coming back to questions of trust, guilt, and the hard work of recovery.

The bond between Jess, Mason, and Lucy gives the series an emotional core, while the rugged coastline and logging roads provide an atmospheric backdrop for tense, grounded crime stories.
