Natalie Jenner was born in England and raised in Oakville, Ontario. She studied English literature at the University of Toronto, then earned a law degree there too, which helps explain why her novels feel equally at home with books, ideas, and the ways rules press on everyday life.

After school, Jenner began in corporate law and later moved into recruiting, coaching, and other work on the people side of the legal profession. She spent years helping lawyers navigate their careers, and she also opened the independent bookstore Archetype Books in Oakville. That mix of jobs matters. Her fiction pays close attention to workplaces, class, ambition, and the practical question of how a person remakes a life.

Books were never a side interest she drifted away from.

Jenner has said she wanted to be a writer for most of her life. She wrote for years, finished several unpublished novels, and then stepped back from chasing publication for a long stretch while work and family took priority. Her debut did not arrive early. It came after persistence, disappointment, and the kind of patience that can only be learned the hard way.

The turn back to fiction came during a painful period. After her husband was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Jenner found herself returning to Jane Austen for comfort. She reread the novels, read more about Austen’s life, and made a trip to Chawton, the Hampshire village where Austen spent her final years. Out of that reading and that grief came the spark for The Jane Austen Society.

That was the book that changed everything.

The Jane Austen Society introduced many readers to Jenner’s style: historical fiction that is literary without being stiff, deeply bookish, and full of people trying to heal. Set just after the Second World War, it follows a group of villagers who join forces to protect Jane Austen’s home and legacy. Readers who love it tend to respond not only to the Austen connection, but to the warmth of the ensemble and the way private sorrow slowly turns into community.

She followed it with Bloomsbury Girls, set in a London bookshop in 1950, where three women start pushing against the rules that shape their work and futures. Then came Every Time We Say Goodbye, which carries Vivien Lowry into 1950s Rome and the world of film, censorship, glamour, and buried wartime truths. With Austen at Sea, Jenner goes further back to 1865 for a transatlantic literary adventure involving sisters, rare book dealers, Sir Francis Austen, and a fight over what should happen to Jane Austen’s legacy.

There is a clear thread through all of these books. Jenner returns again and again to readers, writers, bookshops, letters, and the lives that form around them. She is interested in what stories do for people under pressure, especially women living inside narrow social expectations. Her characters are often grieving, restless, boxed in, or starting over. Jenner still lives in Oakville with her family.
