Author bio

Natalie C. Parker writes books for young readers that often begin with a sharp hook, a strange danger, and a character trying to hold on to who they are when the world turns frightening. She grew up in a Navy family, moving through coastal places from Virginia to Japan, and that sense of motion shows up again and again in her fiction. Her stories are full of weather, folklore, dark woods, salt air, and communities that can feel safe right up until they do not.

Home kept changing, but stories did not.

After college and graduate school, Parker started down a professional path and then realized she needed room for the things she loved most. She returned to writing, and to playing the cello, and built a writing life by finding peers, mentors, and a steady revision habit. She has talked about spending about eighteen months getting ready to query, then moving quickly through the next steps after a major round of revision. That mix of patience and momentum feels a lot like her books.

Her debut novel, Beware the Wild, dropped readers into a small Louisiana town where a swamp can swallow more than bodies, it can swallow memory. Its companion, Behold the Bones, returns to that same haunted setting through a new point of view, digging deeper into local myths, family secrets, and the kind of fear a town learns to live beside. If you like Southern Gothic with teenagers, heat, romance, and real menace, those books are a strong place to start.

Then came Seafire, followed by Steel Tide and Stormbreak. That trilogy moves from swamp country to the Bullet Seas, where Captain Caledonia Styx leads a crew of girls and women against the warlord who shattered their lives. Readers who come to Parker for action usually stay for the found family, the hard choices, and the way the books keep asking what leadership costs.

Parker likes monsters, but she likes belonging even more.

You can see that clearly in her middle grade fantasy The Devouring Wolf and its sequel, The Nameless Witch. Those books bring werewolves, legends, and magic into stories that are really about friendship, identity, and the need to be seen for who you are. Her horror novel Come Out, Come Out works in a darker key, following queer teens, buried memory, and a haunting tied to the danger of being forced to hide. It was a Bram Stoker Award finalist, and it delivers on both parts of the promise, scary on the page, personal underneath.

She has also written The Assassin's Guide to Babysitting, a fast-moving superpowered thriller, and coedited the anthology Vampires Never Get Old. Across very different settings, Parker tends to return to the same questions. Who gets to feel safe. Who gets believed. What happens when a group of outsiders decides to protect each other instead of waiting for permission.

That instinct carries into her life off the page too. In 2015 she started Madcap Retreats, a program built to help writers learn craft, build community, and close some of the gaps that can make publishing feel shut from the outside. Her work has landed on the NPR Best Books list, the Indie Next List, the TAYSHAS Reading List, and in Junior Library Guild selections. Now she lives with her wife on the Kansas prairie, still writing about girls, ghosts, wolves, ships, secrets, and the people brave enough to choose each other.
