Author bio
Nancy Campbell Allen writes romances that give love room to develop alongside a mystery, a historical conflict, or an unexpected invention. Her books range from contemporary romantic suspense to historical fiction and steampunk adventures. Across those changes of setting, she returns to people who must decide whom to trust, what responsibilities they can carry, and whether their feelings deserve a place in the lives they have planned.
Allen earned a degree in elementary education from Weber State University and has worked as a teacher. Her first novel, Love Beyond Time, was published in 1999. While waiting for that book to be accepted, she wrote its sequel, giving her another story ready to follow the first. Writing became a continuing part of a life that also included raising children and, for a time, teaching fourth grade.
An editor's invitation led her into Civil War fiction.
The four Faith of Our Fathers books grew out of years of research and writing. Allen later returned to that fictional territory through the Isabelle Webb novels, beginning with Legend of the Jewel. That movement from one series into another shows how a historical setting can give her more than a backdrop: it supplies circumstances, relationships, and questions worth following beyond a single book.
My Fair Gentleman takes her into Regency romance through Jack, a man more comfortable at sea than in aristocratic society. An inheritance brings him a title and a set of expectations he hasn't trained for, while Ivy helps him learn the manners his new life requires. Their relationship makes social instruction personal. The book won a Whitney Award, a concrete marker of the response to Allen's work in historical romance.
In Beauty and the Clockwork Beast, a familiar fairy-tale pattern becomes a steampunk mystery. Botanist Lucy Pickett arrives at Blackwell Manor to care for her sick cousin and encounters Lord Miles, whose household carries troubling secrets. Inventions, supernatural dangers, and a difficult attraction share the story. Allen's interest in retelling doesn't stop at changing names: she gives recognizable romantic situations a different set of practical problems and possibilities.
Her historical romances also make space for investigation. The Secret of the India Orchid brings Sophia and Anthony back into one another's lives while a confidential document and an undercover mission complicate their reunion. The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart combines a lonely-hearts column with a suspected murder, drawing Amelie Hampton into detective Michael Baker's work. In both, the question of love develops alongside the harder task of judging another person's intentions.
Romance and uncertainty often arrive together in her books.
Allen's Regency, Victorian, and steampunk novels have appeared under the Proper Romance imprint, and she has also contributed shorter fiction to romance collections. She lives in Ogden, Utah, with her family and has three children. Reading, travel, research, and true-crime podcasts are among her interests. For readers choosing a first book, the range offers several doors into her work, from a social romance to a detective story or an invented world with fairy-tale roots.
