Series background & context

Nancy Campbell Allen’s Isabelle Webb series follows a former Pinkerton spy whose attempt to take a holiday becomes a search for legendary treasure. Set after President Lincoln’s assassination, the trilogy takes Isabelle and her companions from an ocean voyage to India, Egypt and Greece. Historical adventure shares space with romance and mystical objects whose powers draw dangerous attention. The same travellers and rival treasure hunters connect the books, making each journey part of a larger struggle over jewels that promise far more than wealth.

Legend of the Jewel begins with Isabelle recovering from an injury suffered while trying to warn Lincoln. Her broken leg has begun to heal, but grief over his death remains. She boards a ship for Bombay with her young charge Sally Rhodes, hoping for distance from earlier events. Meeting Utah blacksmith James Ashby changes the trip’s purpose. He is looking for his younger brother Phillip, who has joined the disreputable Thaddeus Sparks in pursuit of a mysterious treasure. Isabelle’s experience makes it difficult for her to remain a spectator when the search turns dangerous.

A journey planned for recovery becomes another test of her instincts.

In India, the apparent helpfulness of fellow travellers gives way to uncertain motives, murder and kidnapping. The Jewel of Zeus becomes a focus for people with competing aims, while Isabelle and James have a more immediate concern for someone at risk. The travel setting matters because the characters have to judge unfamiliar people and situations without the security of their usual surroundings. Isabelle’s investigative background helps her read danger, but the mystical nature of the treasure introduces questions that ordinary professional experience may not answer. The developing relationship adds a reason to care about more than completing the search.

The Pharaoh’s Daughter carries the group toward Egypt after two young stowaways force another pursuit. An encounter with Isabelle’s former guardian leads to an expedition near Luxor, where an ancient burial site and renewed treasure hunting create further threats. The Grecian Princess moves the larger jewel mystery toward Greece, where a third stone may bring the pieces together. Sparks remains part of the continuing opposition. The changing locations offer different settings for the same central problem: people seeking power through objects whose history is both tempting and dangerous.

Begin with Legend of the Jewel, followed by The Pharaoh’s Daughter and The Grecian Princess. Following the sequence lets the companions’ relationships and the mystery of the stones develop together. Readers can expect a historical adventure with suspense, romance and supernatural elements, rather than a conventional detective case confined to one town. The appeal lies in an experienced heroine repeatedly pulled into action while trying to protect the people travelling beside her. Each destination broadens the search, but loyalty and trust remain as important as finding the next clue.
