In Orewall, Rhoco Leath is a Boulde who has accepted his limited, solitary life. He is made of stone, and breaking things comes naturally to him. Rhoco has little interest in friendships, romance, or whatever conflicts may be brewing beyond Orewall. Then a fragile glass heart washes ashore and bonds to him, bringing unsettling visions and dangerous magic.

The heart changes the shape of Rhoco's life. Unable to ignore his growing connection to it, he leaves home to find its owner. What begins as a personal quest opens onto a wider world of combative forces, secrets, and magic that Rhoco has spent his life avoiding. The contrast between his tough stone body and the delicate object in his care is a key part of the series' setup.

Crystet shifts attention to Princess Gwynessa Gunvaldsson, a young woman made of glass who is trying to create a better future for her people while carrying grief and facing an enemy who has hurt her deeply. Her story is driven by justice, revenge, and the fear that fighting darkness may change her into something she does not want to become. The series keeps its focus on characters forced to make costly choices.

By Occavas, the wider stakes come into view. Several forces are racing to claim the scepter of alchemy, a powerful source of magic that could endanger Namaté. Below the battlefield lies Occavas, an origin planet hidden from those fighting above. Its safety depends on secrecy, because Namaté and Occavas are connected closely enough that neither can survive the other one's destruction.
