Series background & context
Mythos Academy Colorado returns to the world of Gwen Frost but shifts the spotlight west to the academy in Snowline Ridge, Colorado. The heroine this time is Rory Forseti, a Spartan girl and Gwen’s cousin. Rory has the same warrior potential as the kids around her, but her family history makes her life far more complicated.
Rory’s parents were Reaper assassins who helped Loki’s followers for years before turning against them and paying with their lives. Everyone at school knows exactly who they were, which means Rory walks the halls with a permanent target on her back. Some classmates fear her, others hate her, and a few are waiting for her to fail so they can say they were right about her all along.
In Spartan Heart, Rory is just hoping for a quieter school year when rumors surface about a new group of Reapers who can summon mythological monsters. The attacks that follow show that the war Gwen fought in North Carolina did not end the threat. Rory is recruited into Team Midgard, a mix of students and adults tasked with hunting these Reapers and protecting powerful artifacts.
The follow up books deepen that work. Spartan Promise sends Rory and her friends after Covington, a former librarian turned Reaper leader who murdered her parents. What starts as a straightforward mission to stop an artifact theft turns into a maze of traps, lies, and hard choices underground. Spartan Destiny pushes everything to a breaking point when Team Midgard finally gets a real chance to stop Covington, only to discover he has been planning for them all along.
Throughout the spinoff, Estep keeps the same blend of mythology, action, and school life that defined the original Mythos Academy novels, but the emotional core is different. Rory is not an unsure newcomer; she is a girl trying to carry the weight of her parents’ crimes while choosing a different path. Trust, forgiveness, and what it means to earn your place all sit right beside sword fights and artifact hunts.
You do not have to read the Gwen books first to follow Rory’s story, but longtime readers will recognize teachers, gods, and magical rules. For fans who wished the Mythos world had more room to breathe, the Colorado series offers a fresh view of the same war against Reapers through the eyes of a heroine with her own scars and her own style.
