Author bio
Murray Leinster was the best-known pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins, a writer who spent more than half a century turning out adventure, mystery, westerns, radio work, and science fiction. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on June 16, 1896, and his family moved to Manhattan when he was a teenager.
Writing arrived early. In 1916, shortly before his twentieth birthday, Jenkins sold his first published story, “The Foreigner,” to The Smart Set. He kept freelancing through the years that followed, including wartime service and government work during World War I.
Then came the pulps. Jenkins became one of those writers readers could find almost everywhere, moving easily between crime, romance, westerns, jungle adventures, and strange tales. He used several names, including Will F. Jenkins and Louisa Carter Lee, but Murray Leinster became the name most closely tied to his science fiction.
He had a practical, problem-solving approach to stories. His characters are often engineers, doctors, pilots, working people, or stubborn survivors who have to think their way out of a bad situation. The science may be bold, but the dramatic engine is usually simple: something has gone dangerously wrong, and somebody has to keep a clear head.
His first science-fiction story, “The Runaway Skyscraper,” appeared in 1919. In later decades he wrote ideas that still feel familiar, including alternate histories, parallel worlds, space medicine, and networks of home information machines. Sidewise in Time imagines pieces of different possible Earths colliding with one another. A Logic Named Joe follows a technician dealing with a household computer network that knows far too much about its users.
He also had a knack for space adventure. Space Platform and Space Tug follow Joe Kenmore as early orbital projects face sabotage, accidents, and political pressure. The Med Service stories send medical officer Calhoun and his tormal companion Murgatroyd to troubled planets, where disease outbreaks and public fear can be as dangerous as any alien threat.
Leinster did not stick to one lane.
Books such as The Forgotten Planet, Murder Madness, and The Other Side of Here show the range of his interests, from survival on altered worlds to conspiracies and invasions from beyond ordinary space. His fiction often puts ordinary reasoning under extraordinary pressure, then lets the solution emerge through observation, patience, and a willingness to question the obvious answer.
In 1956, he received a Hugo Award for “Exploration Team.” He continued publishing into the 1960s, wrote tie-in novels for television science fiction, and remained busy enough that his bibliography can feel like several careers gathered under one name.
Jenkins married Mary Mandola in 1921, and they had four daughters. He died in Gloucester, Virginia, on June 8, 1975. For readers coming to him now, the appeal is direct: inventive old-school premises, brisk pacing, and people who meet impossible problems by getting to work.
