The Med Service stories follow Calhoun, a medical officer who travels the human-settled galaxy in a small Med Ship. In practice, every stop brings a crisis that has grown larger because people ignored it, hid it, or decided fear was easier than cooperation.

Calhoun is not a grand doctor in a shining hospital. He is usually arriving late, short on supplies, and facing authorities who do not want an outsider asking questions. His best partner is Murgatroyd, a tormal, a small furry animal whose rapid immune response makes him invaluable when disease is involved. Murgatroyd also brings a welcome bit of warmth and comedy to some very tense situations.

The series treats medicine as detective work.

In The Mutant Weapon, Calhoun investigates a planet whose people have turned a strange biological danger into a political problem. This World Is Taboo sends him into the middle of a quarantine, a famine, and a deep prejudice against the blue-skinned survivors of a past plague. The danger in these books is rarely just a germ. It is panic, stubbornness, old grudges, and leaders who would rather protect their own position than solve the problem.

Doctor to the Stars collects three shorter Calhoun adventures, while S.O.S. From Three Worlds brings together further cases involving epidemic threats and colonies on the edge of collapse. Each story can be read on its own, but the familiar pattern is part of the fun: Calhoun lands somewhere troubled, finds that the official explanation does not add up, and keeps working until he can see the real shape of the emergency.

The setting is a broad interstellar civilization, though the stories stay close to the practical details of small communities. Leinster is interested in what happens when a settlement is underfed, isolated, overcrowded, or trapped by a terrible decision made generations earlier. Calhoun's medical training matters, but so do his patience and his refusal to treat people as disposable.

These are brisk, idea-driven science-fiction adventures with a strong problem-solving streak. Readers should expect quarantine zones, improvised investigations, tense shipboard scenes, and solutions that depend on understanding both biology and human behavior.
