Series background & context

Mui gets introduced as the daughter of an assassin, which is already a lot for any teenager to carry around. But these books are not just about living in her mother's shadow. They are about what happens when Mui starts asking the questions her mother would rather leave buried.

Mui is young, but she is not naive.

The series begins with A Book of Truths, when a strange book full of coded notes lands in Mui's hands. What looks like nonsense turns out to be a trail. Soon she is wondering whether her father is really dead, who is hiding information about her family, and why people keep dying around anyone who knows too much. That basic setup gives the whole series a different texture from the Sei books. There is still action, still danger, still people willing to kill. But there is also school life, curiosity, identity, and the maddening experience of realizing adults around you have been editing your life for years.

Confrere Preparatory Academy becomes part of the series' atmosphere, as do the Bibliokeepers and the coded systems wrapped around old books and hidden messages. That blend is the fun of it. One minute Mui is navigating ordinary teenage pressures. The next she is dealing with stalkers, secret organizations, and truths that could blow apart everything she thought she knew about her parents.

The action novellas widen the world even more. Books like The Monastery, The Blood Grove, and The Minotaur send Mui into tighter, more survival-focused situations, often with Ryan at her side. Those stories keep the momentum high while showing that Mui is not just someone who solves riddles. She can move, adapt, and fight when things collapse around her.

The tone here is a touch younger than the Sei books, but not softer. Hutchinson still likes twists, still likes speed, and still likes putting his characters in trouble that does not have an easy answer. The big difference is perspective. Mui is smart enough to spot lies but young enough to be changed by what she learns, and that gives the series real energy.

Start with A Book of Truths if you want the full arc. If you stay with it, you get a coming-of-age thriller series that mixes family mystery, coded clues, and action in a way that feels a little different from the rest of Hutchinson's work, while still fitting neatly into his larger world.
