Mr. Wrong Number

by Lynn Painter

2022

After a spectacular streak of bad luck leaves Olivia Marshall jobless and homeless, she moves in with her brother and his infuriating roommate, Colin. A flirty wrong-number text sparks an anonymous relationship, unaware that the man on the other end is Colin himself.

Series background & context

The Mr. Wrong Number series shifts Lynn Painter’s rom-com lens to twenty-somethings trying to build adult lives while still feeling like a bit of a mess. The books are loosely connected standalones set around a tight group of friends and siblings in Nebraska, starting with Olivia Marshall’s catastrophically unlucky season in Mr. Wrong Number.

When readers meet Olivia, she has lost her job, walked in on her boyfriend cheating, and accidentally set her apartment on fire while burning old love letters. With nowhere else to go, she moves in with her brother and his annoyingly perfect roommate, Colin Beck. One late night, a suggestive text from an unknown number kicks off a witty, increasingly steamy exchange with a stranger she dubs Mr. Wrong Number, giving her a secret outlet just as her real life falls apart.

The twist, of course, is that Colin is the man on the other end of those messages. Watching him realize that the chaotic girl in his spare room is also the clever voice on his phone provides much of the tension. The story juggles workplace mishaps, family expectations, and Olivia’s struggle to believe she deserves something stable, all wrapped in rapid fire banter and hot, text-fueled chemistry.

It is big on laughter and heat, but there is genuine tenderness under the jokes.

The Love Wager follows Jack Marshall, Olivia’s brother, and Hallie Piper, the bartender who shares one memorable night with him at a wedding. Both are reeling from breakups and bad choices, so they agree they are absolutely not dating material for each other. Instead, they become each other’s wing-person on a dating app, trading stories about terrible matches, meeting for tacos after bad dates, and placing a friendly bet on who will find real love first.

As they fake date their way through a family wedding and spend more time together, the line between friendship and something more starts to blur. Hallie is determined to rebuild her life on her own terms, while Jack is trying to figure out what he actually wants beyond the idea of being coupled up. Their story plays with tropes like friends to lovers, wagers, and one-bed scenarios, all while keeping the emotional stakes grounded in believable adult growing pains.

You can read either book on its own, but reading in order lets you catch the cameos and see how this friend group’s lives intertwine. The series as a whole is a good fit if you like contemporary romance with explicit spice, group text energy, and leads who feel like people you might actually know, just with funnier comebacks.
