Series background & context
Moonshine Hollow is where Kathleen Brooks lets herself get a little wilder. The series still has a small-town setting, found family, humor, and romance, but this time the town is full of witches, old prophecies, and a war between good and evil. The result feels different from Bluegrass or Shadows Landing, yet still very much like Brooks.
The story starts with Zoey Mathers, an outsider whose life has just gone off the rails. She lands in Moonshine Hollow expecting exile and embarrassment, not magic. But from Moonshine & Murder onward, it becomes clear that this mountain town runs on more than moonshine and local gossip. Zoey is pulled into witchcraft, ancient conflict, and a fate much bigger than she ever asked for. Slade becomes central to that arc, and later books widen the focus to characters like Jane and Polly.
The town is magical. Literally.
Even with the paranormal angle, Brooks keeps the stories easy to follow because the emotional spine stays simple. People want safety, belonging, truth, and love. They just happen to be chasing those things while dealing with spells, spirits, hidden enemies, and a very old fight. That balance makes the series inviting even for readers who do not usually go straight for paranormal romance.
There is also a playful energy here. Moonshine Hollow gives Brooks room for more overtly weird moments, but she never lets the world float away from the characters. The friendships matter. The growing sense of community matters. The town feels like a refuge as much as a battleground.
If you want Brooks with more magic and more myth, this is the branch to try. Start at the beginning and let the series build, because the bigger conflict and the town's strange, cozy charm really work best when you watch them grow together.
