Series background & context

The Bluegrass series is where the whole Keeneston world begins. It starts with women on the run, a shocking crime, and the kind of small Kentucky town that looks quiet until you live there for five minutes. In Bluegrass State of Mind, Risky Shot, and Dead Heat, Kathleen Brooks lays down the mix she returns to again and again: danger, humor, romance, and a community that never quite minds its own business.

At the center of these books are McKenna Mason, Danielle De Luca, and Paige Davies, three women whose lives get tangled up with powerful men, criminal threats, and a town full of opinions. Keeneston becomes their refuge, but it is never just a hiding place. It becomes a place where old feelings wake back up, where new relationships take root, and where trouble has a habit of finding people anyway.

Keeneston meddles.

That is a big part of the charm here. Brooks leans hard into horse-country Kentucky, family networks, local gossip, and the famous Rose sisters, who are always ready to stir the pot in the name of love. There are horses, lawyers, federal agents, and plenty of scenes where a serious threat sits right beside something funny or deeply domestic. The town feels warm, but it also keeps readers on edge because the outside danger never really goes away.

The suspense in this first trilogy comes from a larger national crime and the powerful people trying to cover it up. That gives the books a little more punch than a pure small-town romance. Still, the heart of the series is watching strong women build trust with men who have to earn it, while a new found family forms around them.

If you are trying Brooks for the first time, this is the cleanest place to start. The Bluegrass books introduce the Ashtons, the Davies family, the tone of Keeneston, and the relationships that ripple through many later series. They are the foundation for everything that follows.
