Moonriser Werewolf Mystery Books in Order

This series spins out of Booke of the Hidden, but it quickly finds its own groove. The hero is Jeff Chase, a surfer and tea-and-spice shop owner from Huntington Beach who has one extremely inconvenient new problem: he has been bitten by a werewolf and is now trying to figure out what that means. He is not a gothic loner brooding in a castle. He is a Southern California guy who would really rather be on the beach, running his shop, and flirting badly.

Jeff would really rather just catch a wave.

That ordinary, slightly cocky energy is part of the fun. Jeff is funny, impulsive, and not always as prepared as he thinks he is. He has no great werewolf wisdom to lean on when the books begin. What he has instead are questions, a growing sense of danger, and a dawning realization that the supernatural world has rules, factions, and long memories. Being changed does not automatically make him belong anywhere, and the problem of where he fits, or does not fit, runs right through the series.

The Huntington Beach setting gives the books a different feel from Westerson's other work. These are paranormal mysteries, but they are sunlit in their surface details even when the plot turns dark. Surf culture, local grudges, shopkeeping, and neighborhood relationships matter. So do murder investigations. Jeff keeps stumbling into crimes that force him to deal not just with his new nature, but with werewolf pack politics, human suspicion, and other supernatural currents moving through town.

The Voodoo community around him is an important part of that world, as are the other wolves he meets, many of whom are not thrilled by an outsider wandering into their business. The series gets a lot of mileage out of Jeff's status as a newcomer. He is always learning who can help, who cannot, and who might be both at once. That uncertainty keeps the books moving, because every alliance feels provisional.

There is also a romantic thread, but it never fully pushes the mystery out of the way. The books stay interested in responsibility: what Jeff owes the people around him, what it means to control a dangerous side of himself, and whether a man who spent most of his life skating by can grow up once the stakes get real.

In tone, these are lighter on the surface than some of Westerson's historical mysteries, but not slight. They are funny, sexy, and knowingly playful, yet they still give Jeff real problems to solve. If you like paranormal crime with a beach-town setting, a smart-mouthed hero, and a werewolf mythology tied to community instead of pure angst, Moonriser has a very easy pull.
