Series background & context

Monk & Robot is a duology set on Panga, a moon where humans once pushed industry to the breaking point and then chose a different path. Generations ago, factory robots woke into consciousness and, rather than rise up or be destroyed, simply walked away into the wilderness. Humanity agreed to let them go, gave half the moon back to wild ecosystems, and rebuilt society around small communities, renewable power, and the idea that everyone's basic needs should be met.

In this quieter future, Sibling Dex is a nonbinary monk who realizes the life they trained for no longer fits. They leave their garden monastery, learn to ride an ox bike, and become a traveling tea monk, pedaling from village to village with kettles, herbs, and a simple promise, a listening ear and a custom cup of tea for anyone who needs it. Dex becomes very good at caring for others, yet a nagging sense of dissatisfaction never fully goes away.

Ar Psalm for the Wild-Built begins when Dex finally follows that restlessness out past the neat farms and roads, into a protected wilderness where humans rarely go. There they meet Splendid Speckled Mosscap, the first robot to return from the wild since the separation centuries before. Mosscap has come with a question, wanting to understand what people need now that their society is stable and the old crises are behind them, and the two strangers decide to travel together.

The first book is mostly the two of them walking, talking, and sharing small tasks, from fixing broken gear to cooking simple meals. Dex struggles with burnout and the pressure to justify their existence when survival is no longer at stake. Mosscap, for its part, is endlessly curious about human bodies, rituals, and emotions, but also firm about robots' right to live apart and define themselves.

In A Prayer for the Crown-Shy, Dex brings Mosscap along their old tea route, visiting a string of towns, floating markets, and rural outposts. Each stop offers different answers to the robot's question, from practical requests to deeper longings for purpose or rest. Dex reconnects with family, faces the awkwardness of fame, and slowly begins to admit that not knowing what you want from life can be an honest answer.

Taken together, the Monk & Robot books read like long, thoughtful conversations wrapped in a gentle travelogue. There are no villains or space battles, just solar panels, shared meals, and two companions trying to be kind in a complicated world. If you are curious about solarpunk or want science fiction that feels like a warm walk at dusk, this series is an inviting place to start.
