Series background & context
The Mockingbird graphic novels collect Chelsea Cain s celebrated run on Marvel s superspy and scientist Bobbi Morse. These books drop you into a corner of the superhero world where lab reports, medical mysteries, and dry one liners matter just as much as punching bad guys.
In Mockingbird Vol. 1: I Can Explain, Bobbi is an experienced S H I E L D agent recovering from a mysterious medical treatment. The story hops between her regular checkups on a high tech helicarrier and the missions that send her racing back into danger in between appointments. Strange symptoms, odd lab results, and a trail of dead ends hint that something inside the agency s own health system has gone very wrong.
Cain and artist Kate Niemczyk build that puzzle box plot around a version of Bobbi who is equal parts biologist, martial artist, and master of the withering side eye. She juggles exes, difficult bosses, and stray superhero problems while trying to figure out whether she can trust the very people who patched her up. Visual jokes, charts, and faux paperwork pages are sprinkled through the book, giving it a playful, experimental feel.
The second volume, Mockingbird Vol. 2: My Feminist Agenda, spins a classic locked room setup into a superhero comedy thriller. Bobbi boards a themed cruise ship that doubles as a floating comic convention, complete with costumed fans, corgis, and several of her least convenient former partners. When someone on board turns up dead, she has to untangle the crime while dealing with ghosts from her past and some very pointed commentary about sexism in and out of tights.
Together, the two books tell a complete story about one woman navigating a world of capes, conspiracies, and corporate secrecy without losing her sense of self. They are packed with references for long time Marvel readers, but the emotional arc is clear enough that newcomers can follow Bobbi from page one.
If you like your superhero stories driven by character, humor, and a distinctly feminist edge, the Mockingbird graphic novels are a quick, satisfying read and a showcase for what Cain can do in a visual medium.
