Author bio
M.L. Stedman grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and the feel of that place runs through her work. The coast, the open distances, the dry light, and the sense of people living a long way from help all turn up in her fiction. Although she has lived in London for many years, her novels keep finding their way back to Western Australia.
Before she was a novelist, she worked as a lawyer in London.
In 1997, she decided to try creative writing. She spent the years after that taking writing courses and publishing short fiction in anthologies, learning the craft slowly rather than arriving with a big public debut. She has said that she began with short stories because novels felt too large at first, and that seems to fit the patient way her books are built.
Her writing process sounds intuitive, but not loose. In interviews, she has described starting with an image or a setting and following it until the story reveals itself. Research matters too. For The Light Between Oceans, she dug into lighthouse history and Australian war records. For A Far-flung Life, she travelled through Western Australia and spent time in archives, reading about station life, geology, sheep, and mining.
That first novel, The Light Between Oceans, was published in 2012. It begins with lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne and his wife Isabel on remote Janus Rock, where a washed-up boat carrying a dead man and a baby forces them into an impossible choice. Readers were drawn not just to the setting, but to the central dilemma, the grief under the surface, and the way the story refuses easy answers about right and wrong.
It became a bestseller, sold millions of copies, and was adapted into a 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz.
Her second novel, A Far-flung Life, arrived in 2026 after a long gap between books. It returns to remote Western Australia, this time through the story of the MacBride family and the decades of damage caused by one sudden tragedy. If The Light Between Oceans is tightly focused and intimate, A Far-flung Life works on a wider canvas, but it is interested in some of the same things: love, duty, secrecy, guilt, and the hard work of carrying on.
Place matters in her books. She has said that isolation does not create conflict so much as intensify it. On a lighthouse island or an outback sheep station, there are fewer distractions, fewer exits, and less room to pretend a problem can simply be walked away from.
She tends to write about people under pressure, often in isolated settings where there is nowhere to hide from a bad decision. The landscape is never just scenery. A lighthouse island, a sheep station, a long stretch of rural road, these places put pressure on every private choice. Her characters are rarely simple heroes or villains. They are people trying, and sometimes failing, to do right by the people they love.
Stedman also keeps a fairly private public profile. She has said she would rather readers focus on the books than on her personal life, and that reserve fits the fiction, which pays more attention to human consequences than to the author in the room. She still lives in London, but her novels remain closely tied to the sounds, weather, history, and emotional geography of Western Australia.
