Series background & context

The Miss Underhay Mystery series drops readers into 1930s Devon, where the Dolphin Hotel stands on the waterfront in the town of Dartmouth. Its young manager, Kitty Underhay, is practical, curious and much braver than she ever intends to be, which is useful given how often trouble arrives with the guests.

Kitty grew up in the hotel after her mother disappeared during the Great War and her father drifted out of her life. Raised by her formidable grandmother, she understands every corner of the building, from the polished foyer to the servants' staircase. Early books in the series weave in the mystery of her mother's fate and the shadow that history still casts over the family.

Into this world comes Matthew Bryant, an ex army captain hired as security when anonymous threats arrive at the hotel. Matt is steady where Kitty is impulsive, and their partnership shifts from wary colleagues to trusted friends and eventually to marriage. Alongside them are chambermaid Alice, long suffering local policemen, Kitty's roguish father and a growing circle of friends, relatives and hotel staff who move in and out of the investigations.

Each novel offers a self contained case that plays with classic Golden Age ingredients. One book might centre on a masked ball at the Dolphin, another on a snowed in Scottish castle at Hogmanay, a Yorkshire country estate wedding or a village fair with a fortune teller who meets a grim end. Later stories send Kitty and Matt to the French Riviera, Cornwall, New York and Paris, while later still they return to the Devon countryside for murders among orchards, farms and country clubs.

Despite the body count, the tone stays firmly on the cozy side. The focus is on clues, alibis and conversations in drawing rooms rather than graphic violence. There is room for dry humour, awkward family dinners and the daily work of running a hotel as much as for interrogations and narrow escapes. Ongoing threads such as Kitty's search for answers about her mother, Matt's intelligence work and the couple's slow burn romance reward readers who follow the sequence in order.

You can dip in almost anywhere and still enjoy a satisfying mystery, but the books build a clear timeline from 1933 onwards, with relationships and careers slowly changing as the decade moves toward war. Expect seaside views, jazz bands, masked balls and country lanes, all wrapped around tightly plotted whodunnits that pay attention to small details of place and period. If you like the idea of checking in at a 1930s hotel and finding a puzzle to solve along with your afternoon tea, this series delivers exactly that.
