Author bio

Helena Dixon grew up in England's Black Country, where rows of terraced houses and factory chimneys sat alongside the local library she loved. As a child she read anything she could find, and before long she was scribbling stories of her own.

Before publishing fiction she trained as a nurse, then as a midwife and health visitor, working with families at all stages of life. Those years listening to people in waiting rooms and front parlours gave her an eye for small details, the way someone speaks, what they choose not to say, that later fed straight into her characters.

Writing slotted itself around shifts and family life at first. Under the name Nell Dixon she began publishing contemporary romances in 2006 with Things to Do, quickly followed by books that combined warm humour with everyday dilemmas. Her novels Marrying Max and Animal Instincts both won major prizes from the Romantic Novelists' Association, and Things to Do picked up a US award for best contemporary romance, bringing her a loyal readership on both sides of the Atlantic.

As much as she enjoyed modern love stories, she was also drawn to the puzzle driven crime novels of the 1920s and 1930s. Old photographs, seaside holidays and a fascination with how communities cope with change all nudged her towards a new direction. When she created hotel manager Kitty Underhay and the Dolphin Hotel on the Devon coast, the pen name Helena Dixon gave her room to lean fully into that historical mystery world.

In Murder at the Dolphin Hotel, readers meet Kitty in 1933, juggling masked balls and missing jewels while getting used to ex army captain Matthew Bryant keeping an eye on both her and the hotel. The Miss Underhay mysteries follow the pair through country houses, trains, ships and far flung cities, blending whodunnits with a slow burn romance and the ongoing story of Kitty's complicated family.

More recently, Helena has moved her mysteries into the Second World War with The Secret Detective Agency books. These stories centre on Jane Treen, a coffee fueled War Office administrator with a tweed wardrobe, her contrary ginger cat Marmaduke and codebreaker Arthur Cilento. Together they navigate blacked out London streets, Devon villages and seaside towns where home front murders brush up against espionage.

Helena now lives in Devon, in the seaside town she once visited on holiday, and often jokes that she is a Black Country girl who has happily gone coastal. She has been married to the same man for more than forty years, and their three daughters are now grown with families of their own. A lively cockapoo and a spiky cactus called Spike share the house, along with an ever growing pile of research books.

When she is not writing, she enjoys pottering around old buildings, watching live theatre, tending the garden and keeping an eye on environmental issues. She is open about the fact that she is allergic to all sorts of unlikely things, including adhesives, apples, tinsel and, as she likes to add with a smile, housework.

What runs through all her work is a fondness for ordinary people dropped into extraordinary situations. Whether she is writing as Nell Dixon or Helena Dixon, she builds stories out of small human gestures, seaside weather and the steady pleasure of a good puzzle. She continues to write full time, splitting her days between the desk, long walks by the sea and messages from readers who have made Kitty, Jane and their worlds part of their own reading routines.
