Author bio
Nicola Cornick was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and grew up close to the moors that shaped the Brontë landscape. Her family had a creative streak too, one of her grandfathers was a poet. History, stories, and old places were part of the picture early on.
She studied history at the University of London, earning an honours degree in medieval history. Before publishing fiction, she held a wide range of jobs, including work in university administration, serving refreshments on a steam railway, and attaching price tags to shoes in a factory. Those varied early jobs give her biography a refreshingly unglamorous edge.
Writing had been there since childhood, but a major step came while she was living in a cottage said to be haunted by a Cavalier ghost. There, she wrote her first historical romance. Mills & Boon published it in 1998.
Her early novels are largely Regency romances, full of sharp social rules, inherited secrets, difficult matches, and women who refuse to be quietly managed. Series such as Bluestocking Brides, The Brides of Fortune, Scottish Brides, and Scandalous Women of the Ton pair love stories with family pressure, political intrigue, travel, and the gossip of fashionable society.
Cornick later moved into longer historical novels that connect present-day mysteries with lives from centuries earlier. House of Shadows follows secrets tied to Ashdown House across several eras. The Phantom Tree reaches back to Tudor England and the lost daughter of Katherine Parr. The Woman in the Lake, The Forgotten Sister, The Last Daughter, and The Winter Garden similarly use objects, houses, gardens, documents, and family history as bridges between past and present.
Place matters in her work.
Her fiction often begins with a real historical question and then follows the personal cost behind it. Readers meet women facing limited choices, uncertain inheritance, public scandal, and long-buried family stories. Romance remains important, but so do mystery, local history, and the uneasy feeling that the past has not finished with the present.
Alongside writing, Cornick has worked as a historian, guide, and researcher at Ashdown House, the seventeenth-century hunting lodge on the Oxfordshire and Berkshire border that helped inspire House of Shadows. She has also studied public history at Ruskin College, Oxford, and has given talks on writing and history.
She knows her subject from the ground up.
Cornick has served the Romantic Novelists' Association in several roles, including as its chair from 2017 to 2019. Her books have been translated widely, and her career has moved comfortably between tightly paced Regency romance and layered dual-time historical fiction.
She lives in Oxfordshire, where historic landscapes continue to feed both her research and her imagination. For readers, that combination is the appeal: a love of the past, a taste for a good secret, and stories that make old houses, old documents, and old grudges feel very much alive.
