Mirage Mysteries / Valley of the Sun Books in Order

This is Sandy Dengler's Phoenix series, and it has two names because the books grew over time. The early novels are often grouped as the Mirage Mysteries, while the later ones continue as the Valley of the Sun books. The heart of both phases is the same: homicide investigator Joe Rodriguez and his wildly energetic partner Tom Flaherty trying to solve ugly cases while the rest of life refuses to stay tidy.

Joe is a strong anchor for the series. He is a widower, a father, a Phoenix cop, and a man carrying plenty of history. Tom, by contrast, is all motion, talk, and Irish mischief. The two of them make an excellent team because they never feel smooth or artificial together. Their friendship is messy, funny, loyal, and very human.

The cases can get dark. Cat Killer begins with a car bomb. Mouse Trap starts with an officer-down investigation. The Last Dinosaur turns a movie set into a homicide scene, and Gila Monster spins a bizarre-looking death out of desert wildlife. Later books widen the scope, sending Joe and Tom into family crises, witness protection problems, conspiracies, auto racing, holiday disasters, and trips that reach beyond Arizona.

What keeps the series from turning bleak is its strong sense of character life. Joe has children. Tom has family everywhere. Colleagues recur. Pets recur too, often noisily. Dengler seems to enjoy the absurd edge that daily life brings to homicide work, so the books mix murder, danger, romance, and comedy more freely than many straight procedurals do.

Phoenix and the wider Southwest matter here as much as the parks do in the Prester books. Desert roads, reservations, museums, the zoo, rough country outside the city, and the feel of late twentieth-century Arizona all shape the stories. Even when the books travel to England or Ireland, the series still carries its desert core with it.

If you want neat, icy police fiction, this is not quite that. These books are warmer, stranger, and more personal. They like recurring characters, family complications, regional detail, and a touch of chaos. Start with Cat Killer and read forward. The later books are richer once you know the team, the emotional baggage, and the way Joe's life keeps colliding with his work.
