Mirabelle Bevan Mystery Books in Order

The Mirabelle Bevan mysteries are postwar crime novels set mainly in Brighton, beginning in 1951 and moving through the later 1950s. Mirabelle is a former Whitehall secretary whose wartime work gave her sharper instincts than the people around her may expect. Peace has arrived, but the damage of the war is still everywhere, in private grief, black-market schemes, old loyalties, and people who would rather their past stay buried.

Brighton is more than a backdrop. Its seafront, hotels, bars, boarding houses, and fading grandeur give the series its atmosphere, while its mix of visitors, locals, wealth, and hardship keeps trouble close at hand. The books have the satisfying shape of traditional mysteries, but they do not treat the decade as a costume party. Mirabelle’s closest ally is Vesta Churchill, her friend and coworker. The pair ask questions that police officers and respectable local figures would prefer to avoid. They are observant, stubborn, and willing to follow a lead into uncomfortable territory.

The first book, Brighton Belle, starts with the death of a young Hungarian woman and leads Mirabelle toward gold dealing and fugitive Nazis. In London Calling, the disappearance of debutante Rose Bellamy Gore draws Mirabelle and Vesta into Soho’s jazz-club world, where a Black saxophone player becomes the convenient suspect. England Expects links the murders of a racing journalist and a cleaner to secrets surrounding Freemasonry.

The series gradually widens its map. British Bulldog sends Mirabelle to Paris to investigate the wartime disappearance of an RAF pilot. Operation Goodwood begins with a fatal fire and reaches the racing world, political corruption, and a dangerous scam. In Russian Roulette, illegal gambling, poisoned gin, and a murder put strain on Mirabelle’s relationship with Superintendent Alan McGregor. Indian Summer takes her to a children’s sanatorium, while Highland Fling moves the action to McGregor’s family estate in the Scottish Highlands amid Cold War nerves.

Each novel has a complete case, so readers can enjoy one on its own. Still, starting with Brighton Belle is the best way to see the friendship between Mirabelle and Vesta take shape, and to follow the changes in Mirabelle’s personal life. Expect clever period mysteries with real stakes, a brisk pace, and two investigators who refuse to be pushed aside.
