Author bio

Magdalen Nabb was born Magdalen Nuttall on January 16, 1947, in Church, near Blackburn in Lancashire, England. She grew up nearby in Ramsbottom with her two sisters, a place that later fed directly into the small-town world of her Josie Smith books.

Her childhood was marked by hard losses. Her father died when she was seven, and her mother died suddenly when Magdalen was thirteen. She and her sisters then went to live with an aunt. Those experiences stayed with her, and her books often make room for people who feel left out, worried, or in need of someone steady beside them.

Nabb attended Bury Convent Grammar School and studied art and pottery in Manchester. She trained as a teacher and taught art at a primary school near Bury. Writing came alongside a practical, hands-on life rather than through a conventional literary career.

In 1975, after her marriage ended, she moved to Florence with her young son, Liam. She knew little Italian and initially worked as a potter in Montelupo, a ceramics town outside the city. Later, she became curator of Casa Guidi, the former home of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Florence changed the course of her work.

Her first crime novel, Death of an Englishman, appeared in 1981 and introduced Marshal Salvatore Guarnaccia, a Sicilian officer in Florence's Carabinieri. Nabb based parts of the character on a friend in the force, but Guarnaccia became very much his own man: patient, observant, sometimes out of his depth among the city's powerful people, and deeply concerned with doing the decent thing.

Across books such as Death in Springtime, The Marshal Makes His Report, Property of Blood, and Vita Nuova, she used murder investigations to look beyond Florence's postcard image. Her stories move through apartments, old palazzi, village streets, fashion houses, gardens, and police offices. Readers often come for the cases, then stay for Guarnaccia's home life, his stubbornness, and the sense of a real city full of secrets.

Nabb also wrote for younger readers. Her Josie Smith books follow a lively girl growing up with her mum in a Lancashire mill village. Josie's troubles can be small, a lost glove, a difficult friend, a school performance, or not having enough money, but Nabb treats those feelings seriously. Josie Smith and Eileen won the Smarties Book Prize for readers aged six to eight, while the first Josie book was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award.

Her other children's books include The Enchanted Horse, a gentle fantasy about a lonely girl and a battered wooden horse, and the time-slip story Twilight Ghost. She also wrote journalism and, after recovering from a serious stroke in the 1990s, returned to riding horses, another lasting love.

Nabb lived in Florence for the rest of her life. She died there following a stroke on August 18, 2007, aged sixty. Her final Marshal Guarnaccia novel, Vita Nuova, was published after her death in 2008.
