Author bio
Mindy Klasky has spent a lot of her life around books, and that feels right when you look at the career she built. She was born in Los Angeles and grew up in several cities, including Dallas, Atlanta, and Minneapolis. Moving around gave her a wide view early, but stories seem to have been the constant. She has said that her parents put books in her hands and taught her that reading could take her anywhere.
That idea stuck.
After Princeton, Klasky did not take a straight line into fiction. She has talked about considering very different futures, including stage management and the rabbinate, before becoming a lawyer. She worked as a litigator at a large Washington firm, focusing on trademark and copyright law, and later moved into law librarianship. That mix of legal structure, research habits, and practical problem-solving shows up all over her fiction, especially in the way her magical worlds still feel organized, rule-bound, and oddly believable.
One career change made the rest possible.
When legal work left too little room for writing, dating, sleeping, and ordinary life, she switched tracks and became a librarian, managing large law firm libraries. Eventually she moved to writing full time. It is easy to see why readers connect with her books. Even when she is writing about witches, vampires, or magically gifted girls on the run, her characters usually have jobs, deadlines, money problems, awkward crushes, and families who complicate everything.
A lot of readers first meet her through Girl's Guide to Witchcraft, the opening Jane Madison novel about a Washington librarian who discovers she is a witch. It has the mix Klasky does especially well, romantic comedy, magical chaos, and a heroine trying to hold together real life while the supernatural barges in. That same playful, everyday-meets-impossible energy runs through books like The Witch Doctor Is In and Fae's Anatomy, where hospitals, vampires, fae politics, and romance all somehow fit together.
She has also written straight contemporary romance, including baseball-centered books like Perfect Pitch, and later rom-coms such as The C Word, which brings love story warmth to the very specific pressures of 2020. On the fantasy side, The Glasswrights' Apprentice introduced Rani Trader, a young woman caught up in murder, guild politics, and class rules in a deeply built secondary world. That novel won the Barnes and Noble Maiden Voyage Award, and it still shows another side of Klasky, the writer who likes brave heroines, layered systems, and high stakes.
Her books move across genres, but there are some clear through-lines. She likes smart women who have to figure things out in motion. She likes settings with rules, whether that means a baseball team, a magical court, a theater company, or a guild-bound kingdom. She likes humor, but she also likes pressure, the kind that reveals character. Even in lighter books, people usually have something real on the line.
Her personal life sounds as lively as some of her plots. She has written about a year in which she went on twenty-eight first dates, then swore off dating for a while before giving it one last try online and meeting her husband. These days she writes full time, quilts, knits, and keeps company with her husband and cats. It is a grounded picture, which feels fitting for an author whose stories often ask what happens when ordinary life gets interrupted by magic, love, or both.
