Author bio

Mimi Matthews is a USA Today bestselling author who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where horses, books, and history were all part of daily life. She got her first horse at six, rode in the foothills of Mt. Diablo, and stayed in the area through college and law school. That mix of California roots and deep affection for the nineteenth century still shows up all over her work.

She started early.

As a child, Matthews told stories to her mother, who encouraged her to write them down. She wrote her first novel at thirteen and landed her first literary agent at eighteen, long before she became a published author. Even then, the impulse was already there, to tell emotional stories and to keep going until the world on the page felt real.

Then life took a different turn.

She built a career as an attorney and stepped away from fiction for a while. Years later, after breaking her neck and dealing with a lasting cervical spine injury, she found her way back to writing. That return seems to have sharpened her instincts rather than softened them. Her books care about vulnerable people, real obstacles, and love stories that feel earned.

Her fiction sits at the meeting point of romance, history, and atmosphere. Books like The Lost Letter, The Matrimonial Advertisement, The Work of Art, The Siren of Sussex, and Rules for Ruin show different sides of her range, from second-chance longing and marriage-of-convenience tension to Gothic shadows and sharper social intrigue. Readers often come to her for the slow burn, the emotional pull, and the sense that every glove, horse, hallway, and drawing room has been properly lived in.

She also writes nonfiction, and that matters. In books such as The Pug Who Bit Napoleon and A Victorian Lady's Guide to Fashion and Beauty, she explores nineteenth-century culture through animals, fashion, beauty, and everyday customs. You can feel the same habits of research in her novels, where class, law, disability, money, and women's limited choices are never just background decoration.

Another thing readers tend to love is the kind of people she puts at the center. Her heroines are often intelligent, practical, and a little out of step with what society wants from them. Her heroes can be wounded, complicated, or misunderstood, but never beyond hope. Across the books, she keeps returning to questions of independence, reputation, recovery, and how people build a life when the world has already tried to narrow it for them.

Today she lives in California with her family, along with an Andalusian dressage horse, a miniature poodle, a Sheltie, and two Siamese cats. It feels fitting. Matthews writes romances full of animals, weather, houses with secrets, and people who need both tenderness and courage, and she writes them with the calm assurance of someone who has done the research and still remembers the heart.
