Miss Beresford and the Beast

by Mimi Matthews

2026

Free at last for one Yorkshire summer, Charlotte Beresford wanders toward a cursed village and a crumbling manor she has been warned to avoid. There she meets battle-scarred Magnus Sterling, and fairytale danger starts to feel personal.

Series background & context

Daughters of Somerset is a new Mimi Matthews series, and right now its identity comes from the first book, Miss Beresford and the Beast. That opener promises a Victorian romance with strong fairytale undertones, a remote Yorkshire setting, and the kind of brooding atmosphere Matthews handles very well.

The story centers on Charlotte Beresford, a young woman who has spent too much of her life under strict supervision and is quick to seize a rare stretch of freedom. An invitation takes her far from social routine to a village rumored to be cursed, where the safest course would be to mind her manners, keep out of trouble, and stay away from the derelict manor house on the moors. Charlotte, naturally, is not built for that kind of passive obedience.

The house on the moor matters.

Waiting at the other edge of the story is Magnus Sterling, battle-scarred, bad-tempered, and newly returned to England to settle his late father's affairs. He wants privacy, not romance, and certainly not a curious stranger wandering onto his property. That clash between a heroine hungry for room and a hero who has shut himself away gives the series a strong opening shape.

Because the series is only just beginning, there is not yet a long, visible arc stretching across multiple books. What is clear already is the mood, romantic, slightly shadowed, and rooted in place. If you like your historical romance with whispers of curses, fairytale echoes, and a heroine willing to walk straight toward the forbidden house, this is the sort of series launch that will probably grab you fast.

It starts with curiosity, atmosphere, and trouble.
