Mike Attebery Books in Order

Mike Attebery was born in Farmington, New Mexico, and grew up between Farmington and Madison, Connecticut. Those two places echo through his books. One gives him desert heat, local history, and small-town politics. The other helps point him toward the sharper, more urban side of his fiction, where weather, mood, and setting do a lot of the heavy lifting.

He studied film and animation at Rochester Institute of Technology, and later built a career as a writer and editor. He has also worked as editor-in-chief of High-Def Digest, which fits the feel of his novels. They move quickly, think visually, and know how to cut straight to the moment that matters.

Fiction came early, and it stuck.

His first novel, On/Off, arrived in 2008. It starts with a college freshman whose experimental brain implant eases the symptoms of early-onset Parkinson's disease, then pushes into stranger, darker territory. Even in that debut, you can see a few of the things that keep turning up in his work: identity, pressure, romance, and the uneasy sense that ordinary life can shift fast.

A lot of readers will probably meet him through the Brick Ransom books, and that makes sense. Seattle On Ice, Bloody Pulp, and Billionaires, Bullets, Exploding Monkeys are fast, funny crime novels set in and around Seattle. Brick is a capable lawman with a wry streak, bad luck, and very little patience for crooks, and Attebery drops him into blizzards, witness-protection disasters, hostage crises, and murders tied to the literary world.

Place matters here.

In Chokecherry Canyon and Firepower, Attebery shifts to Farmington and the Four Corners region, following reporter Luke Murphy as he digs into murder, greed, energy politics, and the stories powerful people would rather leave alone. These books feel sunbaked and grounded. They still move like thrillers, but they are also deeply interested in hometown loyalties, buried history, and the way a local paper can sit right at the center of a town's pressure points.

Then there is the Grimwood Trilogy, Flares, Ordinary World, and The Midnight Visitors. These books trade detectives and reporters for a group of college friends at Grimwood University, where a famous writing program and a half-buried campus tragedy shape everything around them. Loren Austin and Braden McNutt sit close to the center, but the trilogy works because it cares about the whole circle of friends, their shifting bonds, and the strange pull of the past.

He does not stay in one lane for long.

That range also includes Rose in Saint Tropez, a romantic comedy set in the South of France, which shows another side of his work. Humor runs through nearly all of his books, but the mix changes from project to project. Sometimes it is dry and dark. Sometimes it softens a tense scene. Sometimes it sits right next to heartbreak, uncertainty, or a very bad decision.

Across genres, Attebery tends to write about people in transition: rookies, students, returning sons, old flames, and professionals who suddenly have too much on the line. He also likes institutions with history, police departments, universities, newspapers, and wealthy power circles, and he likes asking what those places hide. He lives with his family on an island off the coast of Washington State, and that mix of Northwest distance, Southwestern memory, and interest in the secret lives of places gives his fiction a wide but connected range.
