Series background & context

Harlan Coben fans know the name Bolitar well, but this series shifts the spotlight to a younger, angrier generation. Mickey Bolitar isn’t just a miniature version of his famous uncle Myron. He is a kid dealing with a mountain of grief that would crush most adults. After witnessing his father’s death in a horrific car accident and watching his mother spiral into drug addiction, Mickey gets shipped off to the suburbs of New Jersey.

He lands in his uncle’s house, forced to live with a relative he barely knows and definitely doesn’t trust. It is a harsh adjustment. Mickey goes from traveling the world with his parents to navigating the mundane cruelty of an American high school. He feels alone, displaced, and haunted by the suspicion that the official story of his father’s death might be a lie. While Myron Bolitar is usually the one cracking jokes and saving the day, here he is just a well-meaning but confused guardian trying to connect with a nephew who wants nothing to do with him.

Luckily, Mickey doesn't have to face the darkness by himself for long.

He falls in with a group of fellow outcasts who quickly become his lifeline. There is "Spoon," a lovable, quirky nerd who speaks in random trivia facts and wears his heart on his sleeve, and Ema, a guarded artist who hides her true self behind goth clothes and a prickly attitude. They aren’t the popular crowd, and that is exactly why they work so well together. They form a scrappy, improvised detective team that stumbles into trouble way above their pay grade.

The mystery centers on the Abeona Shelter, a shadowy organization dedicated to rescuing children and protecting the vulnerable. What starts as a search for a missing girlfriend in the first book, Shelter, spirals into a much larger conspiracy involving World War II secrets, the Holocaust, and the truth about Mickey’s own lineage. The deeper they dig, the more they realize that the Bolitar family history is far more complicated than a few basketball trophies.

While these books are marketed as Young Adult, don't let the label fool you into thinking they are "Coben Lite."

The stakes are incredibly high, and the danger feels visceral. Mickey has his uncle’s height and basketball skills, but he carries a much heavier chip on his shoulder. He is driven by a desperate need for answers, willing to break rules and face down a terrifying local legend known as the Bat Lady to get them. It’s a coming-of-age story wrapped in a thriller, delivering the same rapid-fire pacing and shock endings that adult readers have come to expect from the author.
