Where should I start?
If you want the big epic from the beginning: Hunter's Oath → Hunter's Death → The Broken Crown
If you want found family and city politics first: The Hidden City → City of Night → House Name → The Broken Crown
If you want the easiest entry point: Cast in Shadow → Cast in Courtlight → Cast in Secret
If you want YA supernatural drama: Silence → Touch → Grave
Author bio
Michelle Sagara West was born Michelle Michiko Sagara in East York, Ontario, to Japanese immigrant parents, and she grew up in Toronto. She was the oldest of four children, and she was a reader early, the kind of reader who moved from Nancy Drew to Enid Blyton to Tolkien and never really stopped.
Books came first.
She studied physics at the University of Toronto, then switched to English, which feels very on brand in hindsight. Science and story lived side by side for a while, but writing kept winning. She eventually left university a few credits short of a degree because she wanted to give fiction a real try.
The road in was not neat.
Before her debut, she sent a manuscript to Del Rey in 1987 and got it back with a rejection. She revised it, sent it in again, and got another rejection, this time with a famously blunt letter from Lester del Rey. Buried inside that tough response was the note that a long flashback should really be its own first book. She took that advice, wrote the missing opening, and the result became Into the Dark Lands in 1991.
That mix of stubbornness and flexibility shows up all through her career. She writes as Michelle Sagara, Michelle West, and sometimes Michelle Sagara West, not because the books are the same in costume, but because they really do have different shapes. Under Michelle West she built the large, layered Essalieyan world through Hunter's Oath, The Broken Crown, The Hidden City, Hunter's Redoubt, and The Wild Road. Those books are big on politics, memory, loyalty, old bargains, and the way private choices keep colliding with history.
She also created one of her most approachable entry points with Cast in Shadow, the start of the Chronicles of Elantra. That series follows Kaylin Neya, a stubborn, damaged, very human cop in a city full of dragons, Barrani, Aerians, and other dangerous beings. Readers tend to love how the books mix fantasy mystery, city life, and long-running emotional threads without losing Kaylin's voice. Later Elantra books, and related novels like The Emperor's Wolves and Shards of Glass, keep opening that world from new angles.
She can shift gears, too. Silence, the first Queen of the Dead novel, takes grief, ghosts, and teenage isolation and turns them into a contemporary paranormal story that feels very different from her epic fantasy. Her shorter fiction shows the same range, moving from fairy tale turns to historical what-ifs to stories set in her larger fantasy worlds.
Success, in her case, is easy to see in plain facts. She was twice nominated for the Campbell Award, built multiple long-running fantasy series, and kept writing across decades while also working in the book world from the retail side. She has worked part-time at Bakka, a well-known Toronto bookstore, and she has also written the Musing on Books column for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.
She still lives in Toronto with her husband and their two children. On her author site, she jokes that she regrets not having dogs. That feels fitting. Even at her most expansive, her work never loses sight of ordinary domestic wants, the people you come home to, the shelf space you don't have, the life that keeps going while empires rise and fall.
