Author bio
Michelle Paver was born in Nyasaland, now Malawi, where her South African father ran the small Nyasaland Times and her Belgian mother wrote a weekly gossip column. In 1963 the family moved to England, and she grew up in Wimbledon before reading biochemistry at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
Oxford sharpened her curiosity, but it also showed her that science wasn't going to be the whole story. She got a first, made some of her first serious attempts at fiction there, and even turned her final year work into a long written thesis because she was pulled toward narrative as much as research.
Then came law.
Paver chose it almost on impulse, hoping it would be a practical day job that left room for writing. Instead she ended up at a large City firm, qualified as a solicitor, and rose quickly to become a partner handling scientific litigation. It was impressive from the outside, but it left less and less space for the life she actually wanted.
The real break came after her father's death in 1996. She negotiated a year away from the firm, spent 1997 travelling through Peru, Ecuador, South Africa, France, and the United States, and finished the first draft of Without Charity. When she returned to the office, the answer was suddenly obvious. She sent the manuscript to a publisher, resigned, and soon had a contract.
Those early books already show a lot of what she does well. Without Charity and A Place in the Hills are rooted in buried histories and emotional fallout. The later Daughters of Eden novels, beginning with The Shadow Catcher, turn to colonial Jamaica, family entanglements, and the way class, race, and old secrets keep shaping the present.
Long before all that, she was the sort of child who loved myths, wolves, and the distant past. She has written about reading everything she could find on animal behaviour and ancient peoples, buying a herbal, and even digging up her parents' lawn to grow strange medicinal plants. Those interests never really faded.
They just found the right form in Wolf Brother.
Paver had carried the idea of a boy and a wolf for about twenty years before realising it belonged in prehistory, not a later historical setting. That became Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, the series that brought Torak, Renn, and Wolf to a wide readership. Readers tend to love those books for their pace, their closeness to nature, and the strength of the friendships at the center.
Research is a huge part of her writing life. She has travelled widely for her books, from the Arctic and northern Scandinavia to Greece, Egypt, the Carpathians, and Jamaica. She has described hiking alone in remote places, coming face to face with a mother bear in California, crawling through caves, and taking notes in abandoned Arctic camps. That habit of looking closely is a big part of why her settings feel so physical.
Her adult fiction carries the same careful sense of place, but turns it toward fear. Dark Matter grew out of a trip around Spitsbergen and became an Arctic ghost story. Thin Air climbs into the Himalayas, while Wakenhyrst shifts to the eerie fens of Edwardian Suffolk. Ghost Hunter, the closing book of the original Chronicles of Ancient Darkness run, won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
She still writes full time, moving between adventure, history, and the supernatural without losing the thread that connects them. Wild landscapes matter in her books. So do animals, old beliefs, and ordinary people trying to stay brave when the world turns strange.
