Author bio
Michele Pariza Wacek taught herself to read when she was three because she wanted to write stories that badly. That early pull toward words never really went away. She grew up in Wisconsin, and that landscape still shows up all over her fiction, especially in the small towns, cold winters, and ordinary places that hide something darker underneath.
Writing came first.
She studied English and Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then built a long career as a professional copywriter. In 1998 she started a freelance copywriting business, and over time that grew into a larger marketing and copywriting company. Alongside that work, she also wrote nonfiction, including the Love-Based Business books, which brought her a separate group of readers before many mystery fans found her novels.
Fiction, though, kept tugging at her. After years focused on business writing and nonfiction, she returned to storytelling in a serious way around 2015. Her first novel, The Stolen Twin, came out that year, and from there she quickly built a body of suspense and mystery novels that connect in smart, unexpected ways.
A lot of readers first meet her through It Began With a Lie, the opening book in the Secrets of Redemption series. That series follows Becca and the strange town of Redemption, Wisconsin, where old secrets, missing people, troubled houses, and half-explained shadows never stay buried for long. It mixes mystery, psychological suspense, romance, and just a light brush with the supernatural, without tipping fully into paranormal fiction.
Then there is Aunt Charlie.
With The Murder Before Christmas, Wacek opened the door to the Charlie Kingsley Mysteries, a lighter but still twisty cozy series set in the same world. Charlie makes tea, notices what other people miss, and keeps finding herself in the middle of murder. That series spun off again into The Redemption Detective Agency, which begins with The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive and brings in Emily Hildebrandt, Aunt Tilde, and a wonderfully odd group of older sleuths tackling cold cases in 1990s Wisconsin.
She also writes the Riverview Mysteries, a line of standalones that leans more psychological and often starts with a deeply personal fear. Mirror Image, The Taking, and The Third Nanny are good examples of how she works, sharp hooks, women under pressure, family secrets, and just enough uncertainty to make readers question what really happened. Across all the series, readers tend to come for the clean but suspenseful mysteries and stay for the atmosphere, the steady tension, and the way one lie can reshape a whole town.
Her books are often called clean mysteries, and that fits. She focuses more on suspense, character, and puzzle-solving than on gore or explicit scenes. Again and again, she returns to female amateur detectives, found family, uneasy memory, romance under pressure, and towns that seem nice until you look a little closer.
These days, she has said she is living in Wisconsin again after spending nearly three decades in Prescott, Arizona. She has written about life with her husband, her dog, and her habit of watching the Food Network while imagining she is a much better cook than she really is. It is a pretty grounded image, which also feels right for her books. Even at their strangest, they stay close to ordinary people trying to make sense of what just happened.
