Author bio
Michael Swanwick was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 18, 1950. He grew up with a strong appetite for stories, but his route to a writing career was not especially tidy or direct. Before fiction became his full-time work, he worked as an information analyst for the National Solar Heating and Cooling Information Center.
Then the short stories started appearing.
His first published pieces, "Ginungagap" and "The Feast of Saint Janis," arrived in 1980. Both drew early award attention, and they showed a habit that has stayed with him: taking a strange idea seriously enough to discover its human cost. His stories can be funny, bleak, romantic, grotesque, or all four in a few pages.
Swanwick's first novel, In the Drift, came out in 1985. It imagines a Pennsylvania reshaped by a far worse Three Mile Island disaster, mixing political breakdown, mutation, local power struggles, and a very damaged future. Vacuum Flowers followed with a larger canvas, a Solar System full of altered identities, corporate control, and people whose personalities can be copied or edited like software.
He likes worlds where the rules are already a little broken.
That approach helped make Stations of the Tide a key book in his career. The novel follows an unnamed bureaucrat pursuing a possible rogue magician on a distant planet facing a once-in-a-century flood. It won the Nebula Award for Best Novel. Swanwick keeps the line between technology and magic deliberately blurry, but the story still feels grounded in office politics, suspicion, and one person trying to work out whom to trust.
His fantasy novels are just as willing to get strange. The Iron Dragon's Daughter takes place in an industrialized Faerie where dragons are built as weapons and a human changeling named Jane tries to escape factory slavery. Later books, The Dragons of Babel and The Iron Dragon's Mother, return to that hard-edged world from new angles. These are not cozy visits to Faerie. They are stories about survival, ambition, machines, and the uncomfortable ways fantasy can resemble ordinary systems of power.
He also has a lighter, slyer side.
The Darger and Surplus stories follow two con artists in a post-collapse future. Aubrey Darger is human, Surplus is a genetically engineered dog-man, and together they talk their way into courts, caravans, wars, and disasters they are rarely equipped to handle. Dancing with Bears and Chasing the Phoenix make room for elaborate schemes, old technologies, and plenty of trouble caused by confidence outrunning good sense.
Short fiction has remained central to Swanwick's work. Stories such as "The Very Pulse of the Machine," "Scherzo with Tyrannosaur," "The Dog Said Bow-Wow," and "Legions in Time" won Hugo Awards, while collections including Tales of Old Earth, The Best of Michael Swanwick, and Not So Much, Said the Cat show how widely he ranges. A story may involve lunar workers, dead laborers, dinosaurs, trolls, artificial minds, or an old fairy-tale problem seen from a new direction.
Swanwick lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Marianne Porter. Across novels, novellas, essays, and very short pieces, he has kept following the same useful question: what happens when an impossible idea lands in somebody's everyday life?
