In Chasing the Phoenix, Darger and Surplus travel through a fractured future China, where a ruler hopes to reunite old kingdoms and recover a legendary war machine.

The tone is witty and picaresque, but the stakes are real. Swanwick gives the series plenty of oddball inventions, talking animals, impossible court etiquette, and capers that grow out of control. Under the jokes, though, there is a world still dealing with the aftermath of human ambition. Advanced biology has outlasted advanced industry, and yesterday's inventions can become tomorrow's weapons.
