Author bio
Michael Kerr writes crime stories built around the people who investigate violence, the people who cause it, and the ordinary people caught between them. His books range from London police procedurals to American-set thrillers, with a few ventures into fantasy and science fiction.
Before writing full time, Kerr spent more than 20 years in the Prison Service. That work gave him a close view of criminal behavior and the pressures faced by people working around it. He has said that the experience became useful research, especially when he began writing about serial killers and repeat offenders.
It also gave his fiction a clear direction.
Kerr's early novel Aftermath introduced Joe Logan, a former NYPD homicide detective living a drifting, low-key life in the United States. Logan has a strong sense of right and wrong, which means trouble tends to find him. The series moves through isolated towns, highways, border country, and places where official help is either missing or not enough.
In 2013, Kerr began the DI Matt Barnes books with A Reason To Kill. Barnes is a London detective whose work becomes painfully personal after an attack on a protected witness. The books pair police investigations with killers who are willing to hunt the investigators back. Dr. Beth Holder, a criminal psychologist, is an important part of Barnes's world from the beginning.
The cases don't stay tidy for long.
Kerr later created other detectives, including DI Laura Scott, DI Joe Hope, and DI Jim Cole. Laura Scott's first case in A Deadly Compulsion begins after she leaves the Metropolitan Police for Yorkshire following a family tragedy. In The Snake Pit, Joe Hope faces a killer who uses venomous snakes as weapons. Deadly Purpose puts Jim Cole in the middle of gangland killings, contract murder, and a separate investigation into a pair of brutal offenders.
His standalones give him room to change the setting and the rules. Black Rock Bay returns to a coastal town haunted by old unsolved murders. Deadly Reprisal follows a bereaved brother who takes on the people responsible for a killing. A Reason to Live adds a supernatural edge to a revenge story, while Re-Emergence moves into apocalyptic adventure territory.
Kerr has also written for younger readers. The Adventures in Otherworld books begin when three twelve-year-olds discover a golden chalice and are pulled into another dimension. It is a much lighter corner of his work, but danger, friendship, and high-stakes choices still drive the story.
Away from the page, Kerr has lived in the Yorkshire Wolds, in a cottage set well away from the nearest main road. He has spoken about enjoying photography and wildlife, as well as the pleasure of imagining new characters and placing them in difficult situations.
That last part is the thread running through all his books.
