Michael Kardos Books in Order

Michael Kardos grew up along the Jersey Shore, and that world keeps turning up in his work. Boardwalks, beach towns, struggling musicians, worn-out attractions, and people trying to get by all give his stories a lived-in feel.

Before he focused on fiction, Kardos was a musician. He studied music at Princeton University, played drums professionally for years, and spent plenty of time in bands, clubs, vans, and borrowed places to sleep. That experience later fed the rhythm and pressure of his fiction, especially his stories about friendship, ambition, and the trouble that starts when old dreams refuse to stay buried.

Eventually, music stopped being his full-time path.

Near 30, Kardos began taking writing seriously. He had always read and written, but fiction became the place where he could build a whole world with a laptop or a page, rather than a pile of equipment and a band schedule. He earned an M.F.A. from The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, putting in the long, patient work of learning how stories are built.

Short fiction came first. His work has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies, and he has received two Pushcart Prizes. His first collection, One Last Good Time, links ten stories set around a fictional Jersey Shore town, where adults and teenagers deal with family messes, bad jobs, strange turns of luck, and the occasional brush with the unreal. The book won the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award for fiction.

Kardos moved into crime fiction with The Three-Day Affair, a tense novel about college friends whose reunion becomes a kidnapping crisis. Before He Finds Her follows a young woman raised in hiding who returns to the New Jersey town where her mother was killed, hoping to find the father who may still be hunting her. These books share a liking for ordinary people caught in problems that quickly become much bigger than they expected.

With Bluff, he brought magic, poker, and deception to the foreground. Its protagonist, Natalie Webb, is a struggling magician who gets pulled toward a dangerous card-cheating scheme. Fun City Heist returns to the shore in a lighter but still high-pressure mode, following a former drummer who reunites with his old band for a July Fourth performance that doubles as cover for a robbery. Music, damaged friendships, and risky plans all come back into the mix.

Kardos also writes for people who want to make stories of their own. His textbook, The Art and Craft of Fiction: A Writer's Guide, breaks fiction writing into practical steps, from opening a story and building scenes to revising with care. For 15 years, he co-directed the creative writing program at Mississippi State University, where he also received the John Grisham Master Teacher Award.

The Jersey Shore has remained a useful home base in his imagination.

Kardos now lives in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with his family. He is still a drummer as well as a writer, and his books show what happens when a love of music meets an appetite for suspense, offbeat humor, and characters who have run out of easy choices.
