The fog, the sea air, the old buildings, and the half-hidden local histories give the books a strong sense of place without slowing them down.

Brady himself is the kind of detective who believes in facts, but not only facts. He wants evidence. He also trusts instinct, and that can make him awkward to manage. He is stubborn, emotionally bruised, and willing to push harder than the people above him would like. Again and again he finds himself dealing with cases that look simple on the surface and turn out to be tangled up with old secrets, family loyalties, damaged reputations, and the sort of history small towns never quite forget. His working life is shaped by a small team, especially DS Frankie Thomson, and by the pressure that comes from trying to do careful police work while politics, hierarchy, and grief keep getting in the way.

What gives the series its real pull, though, is the home life running alongside the investigations. Brady is not just trying to catch killers. He is trying to raise Ash well, tell her painful truths, and work out what being a parent looks like after catastrophe. That father-daughter thread gives the books a steady emotional core. Even when the plots turn dark, there is still a sense that the stakes are personal, domestic, and close to home.

The tone sits somewhere between a classic detective series and a more intimate family drama. The crimes are serious, sometimes brutal, but Richards writes in a direct, readable way and makes room for warmth, banter, and flashes of humour. The prequel short reads, The Scars Don't Show and Crossing the White Line, fill in Brady's earlier years and show how he became the detective readers meet in the full novels. The Ghost of Grape Lane adds a Christmas story with Whitby ghost lore in the background.

So if you want a crime series with a strong setting, a damaged but likeable lead, and as much interest in people as in procedure, this is what to expect.
