Author bio

Eileen Brady grew up moving from base to base as the daughter of a U.S. Air Force officer. By her teens she had lived in New York, Wisconsin, Arizona, France, the Philippines, and Yugoslavia. That kind of childhood teaches you to read people quickly, and it also leaves you with a taste for new places, new voices, and a little reinvention.

At Syracuse University, Brady leaned into performance and storytelling. She worked at WAER and WOLF radio and performed with the Syracuse Repertory Company. For a while, the obvious plan looked like acting, not veterinary medicine.

After college she headed to New York City and pieced together the kind of jobs many young artists know well, waitressing, working in an architect's office, and singing radio jingles. One job changed things. At the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, she watched veterinarians at work and felt the pull of a life she had once thought was out of reach. She had always loved animals, but this was the moment when interest turned into a real plan.

Italy sealed it.

Brady was accepted to veterinary school in Bologna, where she earned her degree, met fellow veterinarian Jonathan Grant, and built the foundation for the career that would later feed her fiction. Agatha Christie helped her through school. Brady has said that when exams loomed, she reached for Christie's mysteries, partly for comfort and partly to study how clues and red herrings were tucked into a story.

She and her husband went on to practice veterinary medicine for more than twenty years. Along the way they owned clinics in Staten Island, upstate New York, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Brady eventually shifted into practice management, which gave her more room to write, but the day-to-day texture of veterinary work never left her. It shows up all over her fiction, in the medicine, the animals, and the sometimes funny, sometimes chaotic lives of the people who love them.

Writing came back in through the side door.

As a mother and working vet, Brady wrote when she could. She has spoken about writing poetry, making up stories for her children, and later taking writing classes in Arizona after her daughters were older. A local critique group helped sharpen the work, and a writing teacher encouraged her to stop fighting her own material and use what she knew best. That advice led to Muzzled, her debut mystery and the 2013 Discover Mystery Contest winner, which introduced Dr. Kate Turner, a veterinarian who keeps stumbling into murder.

The books that followed, including Unleashed, Chained, Penned, Saddled with Murder, and Murders of a Feather, stay in that sweet spot between cozy mystery and real working life. Readers tend to come for the animal angle, the small-town Hudson Valley setting, and Kate's steady, practical voice. They also stick around for Brady's knack for turning ordinary house calls, a worried pet owner, a farm visit, a difficult client, into the opening move of a mystery.

These days Brady lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with her husband, two daughters, and a lively collection of pets. She still has a cook's curiosity, a reader's appetite for mysteries, and a veterinarian's eye for detail. That mix is what makes her books feel lived in.
