From there the series widens without losing its prairie roots. From Sweetgrass Bridge begins with the disappearance of beloved football star Dustin Thomson and carries Merry from small-city gossip to bigger questions around public image, community pressure, and whose stories get believed. Home Fires Burn turns inward again, with a suspicious winter death that forces Merry to confront her pre-transition past and the complicated boundaries between family, friendship, and forgiveness.

The setting does a lot of work here. Livingsky is not a generic small town. Winter, long roads, prairie distance, local reputations, and the feeling that everyone remembers something about everyone all shape the tension. So do the nearby communities Merry moves through, and the wider emotional landscape beyond the city itself. The cases are grounded in place, which makes the danger feel more intimate.

These books have cozy elements, recurring locals, sharp observation, a sleuth building a practice, and a strong sense of community, but they also carry more weight than the label sometimes suggests. Merry is dealing with work, money, transition, family strain, and the question of whether starting over is brave or just necessary. That extra emotional layer gives the trilogy its pulse.

If you want mysteries that are character-first, prairie-set, and willing to be tender without going soft, this series is a good fit. The books work individually, but read best in order because Merry's inner life keeps moving. By the end, what matters is not only whether she cracks the case, but whether Livingsky can become a place she chooses, not just a place she came back to.
