A Kiss of Shadows

by Laurell K. Hamilton

2000

Private investigator Meredith “Merry” Gentry is pulled back into the Unseelie faerie court and offered a brutal deal: produce an heir and claim the throne, or die. With assassins closing in, she relies on dangerous allies who want more than her safety.

Series background & context

The Merry Gentry series starts with a problem that isn’t simple at all: Meredith “Merry” Gentry is trying to stay alive. In Los Angeles, she’s built a life as a private investigator, passing as human and keeping her faerie blood quiet. Then the Unseelie Court drags her back into the spotlight.

Merry isn’t just any faerie. She’s royalty—caught in a brutal succession fight where family love and family murder can look a lot alike. Queen Andais offers her a bargain with teeth: return to court, compete for the throne, and produce an heir… or be removed from the board entirely. That ultimatum sets the pace for the whole series.

It’s part murder plot, part succession crisis.

Because Merry is trained to look for clues, not prophecies, the books keep a detective edge even when the magic gets weird. She follows leads, interviews witnesses, and tries to protect innocents caught between human life and faerie rules. But “evidence” can be a glamour, and the wrong promise can bind you harder than handcuffs.

Once Merry is back under Andais’s roof, the series leans hard into court intrigue. Bodyguards become lovers, alliances come with fine print, and every party can turn into an assassination attempt. The cast is full of long-lived fae with their own hungers and old grudges, and Merry has to figure out who’s protecting her, who’s using her, and who’s doing both.

The setting flips between modern L.A. and the dangerous glamour of Faerie, with monsters and myths treated as living, political realities. You’ll see goblins, sidhe, sacred vows, and old magic, but they’re filtered through contemporary problems: workplace control, public image, and the threat of violence when someone decides you’re a problem to be solved. The Seelie and Unseelie courts cast long shadows over everything, and Merry’s half-in, half-out status makes her both valuable and suspicious.

The tone is adult urban fantasy with heavy erotic-romance elements. The sex isn’t a side plot; it’s tied to faerie power, fertility, and survival. Underneath that, the ongoing arc stays steady: Merry is trying to build a version of family and safety inside a system designed to break both.

Start with A Kiss of Shadows and read in order. The relationships, the rules of the court, and Merry’s own abilities build book by book, and the payoffs make the most sense when you’ve watched the pressure rise. It’s a series that rewards momentum.
