Merlin's Dragon Books in Order

The Merlin's Dragon trilogy sits right in the middle of Barron's larger Merlin Saga, and it changes the angle in a smart way. Instead of staying with young Merlin as the sole center of the story, these books give much of the spotlight to Basil, a strange little creature who is part lizard, part bat, and far more important than he first looks. That shift keeps the world feeling fresh while still deepening everything that came before.

At the start of The Dragon of Avalon, Basil is small, nervous, and easy to underestimate. Once he discovers a threat to Avalon and to Merlin, he is pulled into an adventure that crosses the Great Tree, the spirit realm, and some of the most dangerous corners of this world. What makes the trilogy work is that Basil never feels like a substitute hero. He has his own fears, loyalties, blind spots, and stubborn streak. Watching him grow is the whole point.

By Doomraga's Revenge and Ultimate Magic, the scale gets much larger. Basil has become a dragon and a defender of Avalon, but power does not make life simpler. The realm is slipping into chaos. Battles break out among dwarves, fire dragons, and faeries. Merlin's presence still matters, but he is no longer the one solving every problem, and in the final book he is missing altogether. That forces Basil to carry more of the burden, which gives the trilogy an underdog energy even after the action becomes huge.

The tone here is fast and adventurous, but there is still plenty of feeling underneath. Barron keeps returning to courage, self-doubt, friendship, and the question of what real strength looks like. The books also continue his love of nature and strange creatures. Avalon is vivid and alive, not just a stage for combat. Swamps, forests, caves, and far edges of the spirit realm all push the characters into change.

If you liked the early Merlin books, this trilogy works as a bridge into the larger saga. It keeps the mythic atmosphere, but it adds more creature-centered storytelling and a hero who wins readers over by being awkward, loyal, and unexpectedly brave. Read it after the first five Merlin books, and before The Great Tree of Avalon, for the fullest effect.
