Series background & context
The Merlin Saga is Barron's biggest fantasy canvas, but it doesn't begin with a famous wizard in robes. It begins with a boy who has no name, no memory, and no clear idea why the world seems to answer him in strange ways. From the shores of ancient Wales, the story opens into Fincayra, a land balanced between earth and sky, and then keeps widening until it reaches Avalon, the spirit realm, and a future far beyond Merlin's youth.
It starts small.
The first stretch of the saga, beginning with The Lost Years, follows young Merlin as he tries to learn who he is and what his gifts are for. Barron treats that question seriously. Magic matters here, but so do shame, loneliness, friendship, and the fear of causing harm. Merlin's bonds with figures like Rhia, Hallia, and his mother give the books a warm center, even when the plot is full of ogres, dragons, riddles, haunted marshes, and the rising threat of Rhita Gawr.
Then the spotlight widens.
In the Merlin's Dragon books, the story shifts toward Basil, a strange little creature who turns out to be one of Barron's most lovable heroes. Basil's journey brings a different kind of energy to the saga. He is funny, frightened, loyal, and much more important than he first appears. Through him, the series moves from Merlin's personal origin story into a broader defense of Avalon, with battles that involve dragons, dwarves, faeries, and the deeper magic holding the world together.
The later Great Tree of Avalon trilogy jumps forward a thousand years and introduces new leads, Tamwyn, Elli, and Scree. By then the magical seed Merlin planted has grown into an entire world, layered through roots, trunk, and stars. These books feel bigger and more ensemble-driven, but they still keep Barron's usual focus on identity, friendship, sacrifice, and care for the natural world. Merlin: The Book of Magic works as a visual companion to the saga, and Giant: The Unlikely Origins of Shim reaches back to tell one more story from Merlin's world.
What ties all thirteen books together is tone. These are quest fantasies with maps, creatures, songs, prophecies, and real danger, but they are also books about learning how to live with power without letting it harden you. Barron loves wild places, and that love is all over the series. Forests, marshes, islands, caves, and star-bright realms never feel like backdrop. They shape the story. If you want the full experience, start with The Lost Years and read straight through. The saga grows larger as it goes, but it never loses sight of the young people, and not-so-young dragons, at its heart.
