Ernie is central, of course, but so are Mercy's friends, her difficult family ties, and the people around the edges of the investigations, especially when the stories brush up against the movie trade. Some mysteries lean into studio gossip and Hollywood ambition. Others stay closer to neighborhood trouble, working women, holiday gatherings, or the hidden economies that keep a booming city alive.

The tone is clean, brisk, and companionable. These books like plot, but they also like personality.
