Author bio
Alice Duncan was born in Pasadena, California, and that part of Southern California never really left her fiction. She also had an early Maine connection. When she was only a few months old, her family moved to a farm between Kezar Falls and Cornish, and although they returned to California when she was four, Maine stayed part of the family story.
She has said that writing novels was the one thing she always wanted to do. It just took her a while to get there.
Before she wrote full time, Duncan poured her creative energy into music and dance. She performed with folk-dance groups, sang in Balkan choirs, and spent years doing the kind of artistic work that is joyful, memorable, and not especially dependable as a paycheck. That detour matters because you can feel it in her books. There is rhythm in the dialogue, a light comic touch, and a real love for performance, costume, and public spectacle.
In the early 1990s she finally turned seriously to fiction, took a writing-for-publication class, and went after the work with real focus. Her first published novel, One Bright Morning, arrived in 1995 and won the HOLT Medallion for Best First Novel. Not long after that, she began building the long, varied backlist readers know her for now, sometimes as Alice Duncan, and sometimes under pen names including Emma Craig and Rachel Wilson.
A lot of readers meet her through Daisy Gumm Majesty, the fake spiritualist at the center of Strong Spirits, Fine Spirits, and the many books that follow. Those mysteries are set in 1920s Pasadena and blend murder, family strain, church socials, veterans, flappers, and dry wit. Daisy is a marvelous guide to Duncan's fiction because she is funny, practical, nosy, and much more tenderhearted than she wants people to notice.
Another good doorway is the Mercy Allcutt series, which begins with Lost Among the Angels. These books move into 1920s Los Angeles and Hollywood, where Mercy, a former Boston Brahmin, goes to work for a private investigator and promptly finds herself mixed up in kidnappings, gossip, bootleggers, and murder. Duncan also wrote historical romances such as Wild Dream, Secret Hearts, and Texas Lonesome, plus the early movie themed Dream Maker books and the New Mexico set romances published as Emma Craig.
She likes history, but she does not treat it like homework.
What makes Duncan's work easy to sink into is the combination of solid period detail and an unfussy voice. Her books often feature working women, widows, performers, dreamers, and people trying to get by in rougher times than they expected. Even when there is danger, there is usually humor close by, and even when the stories are romantic, they tend to stay interested in jobs, money, family obligation, and the small absurdities of daily life.
In 1996 she moved from Pasadena to Roswell, New Mexico, where her mother's family had settled long before the town became famous for UFO lore. She later wrote that she liked the lack of smog and crowds there. She also became known for rescuing dachshunds, and for years she kept singing, this time in church, until bronchitis ended that part of her performing life in 2018.
That mix of persistence, humor, regional feeling, and plain old stubbornness runs through everything she wrote.
