Series background & context

The Mennik Thorn books are fantasy mysteries set in Agatos, known as the White City. It is wealthy, old, crowded with competing interests, and shaped by the unsettling power of dead gods. Magic is part of everyday life, but it is also political, expensive, and controlled by high mages who are not known for generosity.

Mennik, usually called Nik, is a freelance mage. He is not one of Agatos's great magical powers, and he would be the first to point that out. He makes his living with smaller jobs, such as breaking curses, looking for ghosts, and helping clients with problems respectable mages might ignore.

Then the cases stop being small.

In Shadow of a Dead God, Nik is framed for murder after a simple favor goes badly wrong. Clearing his name means returning to the world of corrupt high mages he tried to leave behind. The series begins as a murder investigation, but the threats around Nik soon grow into questions about magic, power, old gods, and who gets to control the city.

Nectar for the God raises the pressure when Nik owes a high mage and is asked to prove that an apparent killer is innocent. Strange Cargo narrows the focus to smugglers, an unwanted curse, and an ultimatum that could force Nik out of Agatos. In Legacy of a Hated God, the main sequence reaches its conclusion as a priest asks Nik for protection, a god is murdered, and the city heads toward open conflict.

The tone is brisk and often funny, even when the stakes are grim. Nik is damaged, underpowered, and prone to saying the wrong thing, but he is also loyal to his friends and reluctant to abandon someone in trouble. The mysteries matter, and so do the friendships and debts that make every solution more complicated.

Read the four main novels in publication order, beginning with Shadow of a Dead God. The Dead Man is a prequel novella set about a month before that first novel, offering an earlier look at Nik's difficult first days as a mage-for-hire. It can work as an introduction, but it is also a good extra visit to Agatos after the main arc.
