Series background & context
Mending Hearts, written with Kara Leigh Miller, sits in a different part of Jody Holford's body of work. These books lean into romantic suspense and emotional recovery, with more danger and heavier backstories than her lighter small-town romances. The title fits. Both stories are about people carrying real damage, fear, guilt, and trauma, then being forced to confront those wounds while trying to decide whether love is safe enough to trust.
In Dangerous Love, Doctor Josh Parker is still living under the shadow of his wife's death when a woman is brought into the emergency room, beaten and left for dead. Alessandra Matthews does not remember what happened to her or who she was before the attack. What she does know is that the danger is not over. The story mixes medical tension, mystery, and a love story between two people who both have every reason to stay guarded.
Jaded Love shifts the setting and the emotional angle, but not the intensity. Kristy Andrews heads to New York City hoping for a fresh start after surviving a kidnapping. Detective Jackson Reed is carrying his own burden, guilt over killing an innocent man. Their connection is immediate, but neither one is in great shape to act on it. When Kristy starts receiving threatening messages, the romantic tension and the suspense plot lock together fast.
These are not breezy comfort reads.
That said, the series is not grim for the sake of it. The appeal comes from watching deeply shaken people move, sometimes very slowly, toward trust and healing. The danger in both books matters, but it is there to sharpen the emotional stakes, not replace them. Josh and Alessa, Kristy and Jackson, all have to face more than an outside threat. They also have to decide whether their pain gets to define the rest of their lives.
The series has a cleaner, faith-leaning feel than some contemporary romance, and that influences the emotional texture. The books are interested in hope, forgiveness, and second chances, not only in romantic chemistry. That makes them a good fit for readers who like suspense with heart and want the healing arc to carry as much weight as the mystery.
Because there are only two books, Mending Hearts feels focused and self-contained. It shows another side of Holford's range, one that is less about flirty banter in a charming town and more about how people come back from fear. If her cozier romances are about finding home, these books are about becoming safe enough, and brave enough, to let someone in after life has taught you not to.
